So I have to be honest, this new trailer really....scares me in the worst way. And thats not the ‘heebie jeebies’ kinda scared, the ‘oh no!my favorite franchise is turning into a game of hide and seek’. At first watch I was under the impression this was some sort of teaser trailer. Im thinking we’re seeing another victim getting captured by ‘the family’(like we saw in the demo). Oh! A story is forming I thought! I was starting to get excited...that was up until I followed the link to Resident Evil official youtube page and saw the trailer was labeled as ‘game play’. My heart sank. Im extremely worried Resident Evil 7 may be going the way of Outlast and Alien:Isolation.
Now I’d like to start of by saying that there isn’t anything necessarily wrong with those games. I played a good chunk of Outlast and found it to be fun, but it did get a little stale for me with the game play getting pretty repetitive. I have not got a chance to play Isolation ,but I have read good things and do plan on playing it eventually. What I do have a problem with is Resident Evil becoming one of those types of survival horror. On one hand it could be very cool to see what kind of puzzles they would come up with in this kind of game play, assuming that would become and even more crucial part. But at the same time the running and hiding thing gets pretty old pretty quick. When I think of RE I think of survival horror in the sense of conserving ammunition, hunting for supplies, feeling like the numbers are against me, and just feeling like a badass. Whether I’m Jill finishing off the Nemesis with a revolver shot to the head or I’m Leon and I just finished off the 3rd form of the current Tyrant. What I don’t want to think about when I think RE is sneaking around a house hiding under beds and in closets waiting for a clear coast to run to the next section to rinse and repeat.
I understand that this is supposed to be their way of ‘returning to the games roots’, but this isn’t Resident Evils roots. Resident Evil at its core is all about fighting back. You have this big evil corporation, the Umbrella company, doing all these experiments and cover ups. And it seems like they can’t be stopped until our heroes decided to fight back! Take the limited knowledge that they know and working together to expose Umbrella. I feel like if you take the fight out of RE, you are taking a HUGE part of REs soul. Heres to hoping that we see some zombies or something get shot in the next trailer.
Anybody else have any thoughts, theories, or concerns?
